Pro Tip: Always calculate lot size BEFORE entering a trade. This enforces consistent risk management and protects your account during losing streaks.

🎯 Why Position Sizing Matters

Most retail traders fail not because they pick the wrong direction, but because they risk too much on single trades or use arbitrary position sizes. A 2% loss requires a 2.04% gain to recover. A 50% loss requires a 100% gain. This calculator enforces the "1% Rule" — never risk more than 1-2% of your account on any single trade.

🧮 The Mathematics of Lot Sizing

Core Formula

Lot Size = (Account Balance × Risk %) ÷ (Stop Loss Pips × Pip Value)

Example: $10,000 account · Risk 1% ($100) · 50-pip stop loss on EUR/USD where pip value = $10 per standard lot

Lot Size = $100 ÷ (50 pips × $10) = $100 ÷ $500 = 0.20 lots (2 mini lots)

Pip Value Calculation

• For 4-decimal pairs (EUR/USD): Pip Value = (0.0001 × Trade Size) / Exchange Rate
• For JPY pairs (USD/JPY): Pip Value = (0.01 × Trade Size) / Exchange Rate

Standard lot = 100,000 units ($10/pip on EUR/USD) · Mini lot = 10,000 units ($1/pip) · Micro lot = 1,000 units ($0.10/pip)

Margin & Leverage

Required Margin = (Trade Size × Exchange Rate) ÷ Leverage

With 1:100 leverage, a $100,000 position requires $1,000 margin. The calculator shows margin usage and free margin in real time.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Does the calculator use real exchange rates?
Yes. The calculator integrates with Frankfurter.app API providing live rates for 170+ currencies, updated automatically every 60 seconds. TradingView widgets show live market data and technical analysis.
What's the difference between standard, mini, and micro lots?
Standard lot = 100,000 units → $10/pip on EUR/USD.
Mini lot = 10,000 units → $1/pip.
Micro lot = 1,000 units → $0.10/pip.
Nano lot = 100 units → $0.01/pip (for very small accounts).
How is pip value calculated for non-USD accounts?
The calculator uses live exchange rates from Frankfurter.app to convert pip values to your account currency (EUR, GBP, etc.). All risk amounts and margin requirements are displayed in your selected base currency.
What is "Risk of Ruin" in the Portfolio tab?
Risk of Ruin calculates the probability of losing your entire account based on your win rate and risk percentage. A risk below 5% is considered acceptable for professional traders. The calculator helps you adjust position sizes to keep ruin risk low.
How often do exchange rates refresh?
Live rates refresh automatically every 60 seconds from Frankfurter.app. You can also click the "Refresh" button or "Get Live Prices" for instant updates. The timestamp shows when rates were last updated.
Is this calculator suitable for beginner traders?
Absolutely. Beginners should start with the "Conservative" trading style (0.5% risk per trade), use micro or mini lots, and focus on major pairs like EUR/USD. Always use the calculator before every trade to build good risk management habits.

Risk Warning

Forex and CFD trading carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Only trade with risk capital — money you can afford to lose. Past performance does not guarantee future results. This calculator is for educational and risk management purposes only.
