Master feed formulation for broilers and layers — reduce costs, improve FCR, and optimize protein sources with real-world calculations.

How to use this calculator

  • ① Quick Formulation tab: Select poultry type (Broiler Starter/Grower or Layer Grower/Production). Adjust sliders for Maize, Soybean Meal, Wheat Bran.
  • ② Set nutrient targets: Modify Crude Protein, Energy (ME), Lysine & Methionine – or keep recommended values.
  • ③ Ingredients tab: Fine-tune animal proteins (fish meal, blood meal), insect proteins (maggot meal, BSFL), plant proteins (full-fat soy, sunflower meal).
  • ④ Nutrition Analysis tab: View real-time macronutrients, amino acid profile (Lysine, Methionine, Threonine), Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER), digestibility & biological value.
  • ⑤ Cost Optimization tab: Enter ingredient prices ($/kg) to see feed cost/kg, cost per kg protein, and alternative formulations (e.g., higher maggot meal or blood meal boost).
  • ⑥ Click Calculate / Update: All results update instantly – summary shows total cost, protein%, energy, and projected FCR.
  • ⑦ Actions: Print, Export, or Save your custom formulation with a name for future reference.
  • ⑧ Use API data: USDA, NRC, FAO, and FDA mock indicators show real-time nutrition benchmarks.
Pro tip: Switch between poultry phases to see how requirements change. Broiler starter needs higher protein (22-24%) vs. layer production (16-18%).

Why feed formulation matters

Feed accounts for 65–75% of total poultry production costs. Small improvements in formulation directly impact profitability. A 1% reduction in feed cost per kilogram can save a mid-sized farm thousands of dollars annually.

FCR targetBroiler: 1.4–1.7
Feed cost/kg$0.45–0.55 average
Protein efficiencyHigher = less nitrogen waste

Balancing energy, protein, and essential amino acids (lysine, methionine) ensures optimal growth, egg production, and flock health. The calculator integrates insect proteins (maggot meal, BSFL) and alternative plant proteins to help you reduce reliance on expensive fish meal while maintaining nutritional quality.

The math: formulation formulas & worked example

Core formulas:

Total Protein (%) = Σ (Ingredient % × Protein Content)

Total Energy (kcal/kg) = Σ (Ingredient % × ME value)

Feed Cost/kg ($) = Σ (Ingredient % × Price per kg)

Real example – Broiler Starter formulation:

  • Maize (55%) – CP 8.5% → contributes 4.68% protein; cost $0.30/kg → $0.165/kg
  • Soybean Meal (25%) – CP 44% → 11% protein; cost $0.65/kg → $0.163/kg
  • Fish Meal (3%) – CP 65% → 1.95% protein; cost $1.20/kg → $0.036/kg
  • Maggot Meal (2%) – CP 45% → 0.9% protein; cost $0.90/kg → $0.018/kg
  • Supplements + Wheat Bran (10%) – additional protein & minerals

Total protein = 4.68 + 11 + 1.95 + 0.9 + 2.2 ≈ 22.5% CP (target 22%)
Total feed cost = $0.165 + $0.163 + $0.036 + $0.018 + $0.038 ≈ $0.42/kg
Projected FCR = 1.65 (good efficiency)

⚡ The calculator also computes cost per kg protein, cost per 1000 kcal, and suggests alternative formulations with up to 5% savings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) for broilers?

Excellent: 1.4–1.5 | Good: 1.6–1.7 | Average: 1.8–2.0. Lower FCR means less feed needed per kg of weight gain — directly improving profitability. Our calculator projects FCR based on energy and protein density.

Can insect protein (maggot meal / BSFL) fully replace fish meal?

Partially, yes. Maggot meal (45% CP) and Black Soldier Fly Larvae (50% CP) work well at 5–15% inclusion. They provide balanced amino acids and are sustainable. However, for optimal growth, combine with plant proteins like soybean or sunflower meal to meet lysine & methionine targets.

How often should I reformulate my feed?

Monthly, or whenever ingredient prices change by more than 5%. The Cost Optimization tab helps you compare alternatives like "Higher Maggot Meal" or "Blood Meal Boost" to save 3–5% per kg without compromising nutrition.

What's the difference between layer grower and layer production diets?

Layer Grower (7–16 weeks): lower protein (16-17%), moderate calcium (1-1.5%). Layer Production (17+ weeks): protein 16-18%, but calcium jumps to 3.5-4.5% for strong eggshells. The calculator adjusts mineral supplements (limestone, DCP) automatically.

How is the Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER) calculated?

PER = (weight gain) / (protein intake). Our tool estimates PER using amino acid profile and digestibility factors. Typical PER for soybean-based feeds ranges 2.5–3.0. Higher PER means more efficient protein utilization and less nitrogen excretion.

What does "Cost per kg of protein" tell me?

It divides total feed cost by the protein percentage. For example: $0.42/kg ÷ 0.225 = $1.87/kg protein. Lower cost per kg protein indicates more economical protein sources. Comparing fish meal ($1.20/kg @65% CP = $1.85/kg protein) vs. maggot meal ($0.90/kg @45% CP = $2.00/kg protein) helps swapping decisions.

Can I save or export my formulation?

Yes! Use the Actions panel to Print, Export as CSV, or Save formulations with custom names for later reference. Perfect for farmers tracking multiple rations.

Key economic insight:

Reducing feed cost by just $0.02/kg on a farm producing 100 tons/month saves $2,000 monthly. Our alternative formulations (e.g., higher maggot meal, blood meal boost) show real % savings.

Try: Replace 3% soybean with maggot meal → saves ~3.2% cost
