How to Use This Calculator
Follow these simple steps to uncover which products are truly profitable and which are silently draining your revenue:
1Select Product Tab
Choose from Product 1 to Product 6. Each tab stores separate product data for side-by-side comparison.
2Enter Basic Info
Fill in product name, sale price, and Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) – manufacturing, materials, packaging.
3Add Operational Costs
Shipping cost, Shopify & payment processing fees, returns & support costs – don't skip any.
4Klaviyo Marketing Cost
Enter your estimated Klaviyo cost per acquired customer. This reveals true email marketing impact.
5Email Conversion Rate
Optional: add your email-driven conversion rate to evaluate marketing ROI per product.
6Export & Take Action
Click "Export Current Product" or "Export All Products" to save CSV reports. Use insights to optimize pricing or discontinue low-margin items.
Pro Tip: Switch between product tabs to compare up to 6 products instantly. The bar chart and cost breakdown update automatically when you change any input.
Why True Profitability Analysis Matters
Most Shopify store owners only look at revenue minus COGS and call it a day. But shipping fees, payment processing, returns, and especially Klaviyo email marketing costs silently eat away your margins. A product showing 60% gross margin might drop to 25% net after all expenses — meaning you could be losing money on your "best seller" without realizing it.
Hidden Margin Erosion
Shopify fees (2.9% + 30¢) + shipping + returns can reduce margin by 15-25%.
Klaviyo Cost Blindspot
Email marketing costs $1–$5 per customer. Ignoring it overstates profit by 5–15%.
Data-Driven Decisions
Discontinue low-margin products, raise prices, or renegotiate supplier costs with real numbers.
Real Math Examples
Example 1: Organic Cotton T-Shirt
- Sale price: $49.99 | COGS: $12.50 | Gross margin: 75% ($37.49)
- Shipping: $4.50 | Shopify fees: $2.10 | Returns cost: $1.25 | Klaviyo cost: $3.75
- Total additional costs: $11.60
- True net profit: $49.99 - ($12.50 + $11.60) = $25.89
- Net margin: 51.8% — still healthy, but lower than 75% gross margin.
Insight: Klaviyo alone takes 7.5% of revenue. Without tracking it, you'd overestimate profit by 15%.
Example 2: Coffee Mug (Low-Price Item)
- Sale price: $14.99 | COGS: $4.50 → Gross margin: 70% ($10.49)
- Shipping: $2.50 | Shopify fees: $0.75 | Returns: $0.50 | Klaviyo cost: $1.25
- Total costs: $9.50 → Net profit: $5.49 (36.6% net margin)
- Warning: If Klaviyo cost rises to $2.50, profit drops to $4.24 (28% margin) — shows how sensitive low-price items are.
Formula used: Net Margin = (Sale Price - COGS - Shipping - Fees - Returns - Klaviyo) / Sale Price × 100
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this calculator really free?
Yes! All features including Klaviyo integration, 6 product tabs, and CSV exports are completely free. No license key, no credit card, no signup required.
What is a good net profit margin for Shopify?
Healthy range: 20–40% net margin. Below 10% means you're vulnerable to one return or shipping delay wiping out profit. Above 50% is excellent but rare for physical products.
How do I calculate Klaviyo cost per customer?
Formula:
Monthly Klaviyo subscription ÷ Number of customers acquired via email that month. Example: $150 monthly plan / 50 email-acquired customers = $3 per customer.
Can I use this for digital products or services?
Absolutely. For digital products, set shipping cost to $0 and adjust other fields accordingly. The calculator works for any ecommerce or subscription business.
What Shopify fees should I include?
Standard: 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction for Shopify Payments. Plus any app fees, Shopify subscription cost allocated per product, and payment gateway charges.
How do I use the CSV export feature?
Click "Export Current Product" to download the active product's data. Click "Export All Products" to get a complete spreadsheet of all 6 products. Open in Excel or Google Sheets for deeper analysis and pivot tables.
What if my net profit is negative?
The result will show in red. This means you're losing money on every sale. Options: raise price, reduce COGS, lower shipping costs, negotiate lower fees, or discontinue the product.
Pro Tip
Use the "Email-Driven Conversion Rate" field to calculate marketing ROI. Multiply conversion rate by profit per unit to see email campaign value.
Quick Formula:
True Profit = Revenue − (COGS + Shipping + Fees + Returns + Klaviyo)
