This is an educational estimation — never drink and drive. Individual metabolism, food intake, and other factors affect real BAC. Always follow local laws.
đ Widmark formula with adjustable metabolism (0.012 - 0.018% per hour) & food absorption modifier. Standard drinks: US 14g, UK 8g, Scotland 8g, Australia 10g, Sweden 12g, Japan 10g.
Understanding the BAC Comparator
How to use it, the math behind the scenes, and why legal limits vary by country.
1
How to Use the Calculator
Select your country — The legal BAC limit (e.g., US 0.08%, Scotland 0.02%, Japan 0.03%) updates instantly.
Enter your body weight & sex — Choose kg, lbs, or stone (UK). Sex affects the alcohol distribution ratio (Widmark's r).
Set drinking period & metabolism — Hours over which drinks are consumed. Adjust metabolism (slow/avg/fast) for personalized elimination.
Food intake & drink type — “With food” reduces peak BAC by ~20%. Choose beer (5%), wine (12%), or spirits (40%) to match real servings.
Read the result — Shows whole + fractional drinks (e.g., “~¾ of a drink”) plus a visual pie slice. Use Reset to default values or share results.

Why This Comparator Matters
Travelers & expats: DUI laws are not universal. Two drinks that are legal in Texas could exceed the limit in Tokyo (0.03%) or Edinburgh (0.02%). This tool prevents accidental violations.
Legal awareness: Many people assume one drink per hour is safe. In Sweden or Scotland, even half a pint could be illegal for smaller individuals.
Educational: Demonstrates how weight, sex, metabolism, and food alter BAC — a real-world application of biology and pharmacokinetics.
Harm reduction: Encourages planning a sober ride before drinking, especially in unfamiliar legal environments.
3
The Math Behind the Calculator
Widmark Formula:
BAC = (Alcohol grams × 100) / (Body weight in grams × r) – (Elimination rate × Hours)
- r (distribution ratio): 0.68 for males, 0.55 for females
- Elimination rate: adjustable 0.012–0.018% per hour (default 0.015%)
- Food factor: multiplies raw BAC by 0.8 when “with food” is selected
đ Example Calculation (US, 0.08% limit)
A 75 kg male, drinking US beer (14g alcohol per drink) over 2 hours, empty stomach, average metabolism:
- 1 drink → BAC ≈ 0.023%
- 2 drinks → BAC ≈ 0.046%
- 3 drinks → BAC ≈ 0.069%
- 3.5 drinks → BAC ≈ 0.080% (legal limit)
With food (20% reduction): ~4.2 drinks to reach 0.08%. Fast metabolism (0.018%/hr): ~4.0 drinks.
đ Cross-Country Comparison (same person, beer, 2 hours, empty stomach)
- US / UK (0.08%): ~3.5 drinks
- Australia (0.05%): ~2.1 drinks
- Japan (0.03%): ~1.2 drinks
- Sweden / Scotland (0.02%): ~0.8 drinks (less than one pint)

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the tool account for different drink sizes (e.g., a large wine glass)?
Yes. Select “Beer (5%)”, “Wine (12%)”, or “Spirits (40%)”. The calculator converts each serving to grams of alcohol relative to the country's standard drink definition (e.g., US standard = 14g).
Is this medical or legal advice?
No. This is an educational estimation tool. Real BAC depends on many individual factors not modeled (fatigue, medication, genetics). Always follow local laws and never drink and drive.
Why is Scotland's limit 0.02% but the rest of the UK is 0.08%?
Scotland introduced a lower limit in 2014 to reduce alcohol-related road casualties. England, Wales, and Northern Ireland retain the older 0.08% limit.
How accurate is the fractional pie slice (e.g., “~¾ drink”)?
It rounds the exact decimal to the nearest common fraction (⅛, ¼, ⅜, ½, ⅝, ¾, ⅞) to give an intuitive visual. The numeric value remains precise.
Can I embed this calculator on my own blog?
Absolutely. Use the “Embed this calculator” button inside the tool to copy an iframe code. Works on Blogger, WordPress, and any HTML site.
Always plan a sober ride. The safest BAC is 0.00% when driving.
